In June, 2020 a request was made of the Town of Holliston, Massachusetts to fly the Pride Flag from the Town Hall Flagpole in celebration of Pride Month. That request was denied with the explanation that the flagpole was reserved for “American Patriotic” flags. Residents objected to this decision. In response, the town gave permission to fly the flag from the front of the Town Hall building but not from the flagpole.
In January, 2024, after four years of flying the Pride Flag from the Town Hall building, that permission was unanimously revoked by the Select Board.
Local communities such as Bellingham, Framingham, and Westwood have created new legally-protective Flag Policies that incorporate flying the Pride Flag from their government buildings; Holliston opted to remove it.
The current Holliston Flag Policy is available here.
